Thyroid eye disease (TED), also known as Graves’ orbitopathy, is a complex autoimmune disorder driven by an interplay of immune cells, orbital fibroblasts and tissue remodelling factors that lead to inflammation, oedema and, ultimately, potential vision loss.1 While the disease has historically been challenging to manage, recent therapeutic innovations are reshaping treatment paradigms and offering new […]

In this Q&A, we sit down with Dr Gordon Sloan, a specialist in the field of diabetes and endocrinology. Dr Sloan is a NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Diabetes and Endocrinology at the University of Sheffield (Sheffield, UK) and specializes in diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). DPN, which commonly precedes neuropathic pain and foot ulceration, can severely impact a patient’s quality of life. With a passion for understanding and treating DPN, Dr Sloan has already made a significant impact in the field, having completed a PhD and published original research in renowned journals, including The Lancet.

Mentored by Professor Solomon Tesfaye (Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield, UK), Dr Sloan credits much of his success to guidance from leading experts in diabetic neuropathy and neuroimaging. In this interview, he reflects on his journey, shares insights into his research, and discusses his aspirations to shape the future of diabetes care.

Q. What inspired you to pursue a career in diabetes and endocrinology?

I was initially drawn to endocrinology for its logical approach to diagnosis and treatment, and to diabetes for the opportunity to work closely with patients to support their self-management of the condition. My specialism now lies in DPN, which often precedes neuropathic pain and foot ulceration. Seeing the profound impact DPN on people’s lives drives me to improve our understanding and treatment of this condition.

Q. Can you tell us about a mentor who has had a significant impact on your career?

I am fortunate to be part of a world-leading research team in Sheffield (U.K.), where I have had the privilege of being mentored by Professor Solomon Tesfaye. As a renowned expert in diabetic neuropathy, his guidance and support have been instrumental in my career. I would also like to acknowledge Dr Dinesh Selvarajah, whose expertise in neuroimaging in diabetic neuropathy has also been invaluable to my development.

Q. What has been the most rewarding moment in your journey so far?

Although completing my PhD in 2022, publishing my first original article in 2023, and being a co-author on a paper published in The Lancet were all major highlights, the most rewarding moment was receiving the Young Investigator Award from NEUROdiab. NEUROdiab is a world-leading study group in diabetic neuropathy, and this recognition validated my contribution to the field thus far.

Q. What legacy do you hope to leave in the field of diabetes and endocrinology?

DPN is a severe and prevalent condition that remains poorly understood and inadequately treated. Tackling this global health challenge has been the focus of my career. Although I am still early in my career, I hope my work helps advance our understanding and treatment of this condition, ultimately improving the lives of those affected.
